Method of investigating 1

In the first tutorial, we shared our progress on our first project, Method of investigating, and received feedback from our tutor and course mates.

To choose the location, I first explored in Angel area. I was interested in street graffiti, so I took some photos of the area’s graffiti and canals, but I was not sure whether this location would lead to graphics or not.

However, on my way back from the station I noticed a large number of horse chestnut trees falling onto the pavement. I thought it was a chestnut tree, as I had never seen the shape of this plant before, but on my research I found out that it was a ‘conker’, a horse chestnut tree.

I thought it would be interesting to develop a visual based on this spiky, unique shaped conker, and when I mentioned the idea to my course mates, she commented that it looked like a constellation. So I decided to visualise the conker as a star and visualise its changing shape.

Collecting and Sorting

This Method of investigating encouraged me to do a variety of experiments, so I collected conkers and sketched them, experimented with diagrams, typography and mapping, as well as photographs.

Measuring and Sketching

I was also videotaping the conker and realised that the sound of the conker falling was also very interesting. In the tutorial, I received responses that the mapping of the conker was interesting. Moreover, the tutor told me that I should narrow and fix the location and observe from one perspective.

Mapping and Diagramming

I also received feedback that the sound of conker was interesting and I was given the idea that it could be combined with the visuals.

I couldn’t choose which of the several ideas was the most effective, so it was a very useful tutorial to receive feedback and new ideas from such an objective point of view.

This feedback has inspired me to continue filming further in fixed locations and to further my visual experiments, mainly with mapping. I will also think about how we can combine the ‘sound’ as well.
