Method of investigating 2

This time, we shared the progress after the first tutorial and the content of the second tutorial.

In the first tutorial, I received feedback that I should fix the location and observe further. I fixed my viewpoint on a section of the area where the conker had fallen and continued to take photographs.

Unfortunately, the conker footpath was cleared during the photo shoot, which was very disappointing for me as I wanted to visualise the decay of the conker.

Furthermore, I wanted to record the sound of the conker falling, but as the number of conkers on the trees decreased, I could not tell when the conkers would fall and eventually had to give up on continuing the recording.

So I decided to visualise these by compiling the photos I had taken.

I had the idea to shoot dozens of photos and make a video, but as the conker season was already over, I decided to develop the images based on the photos I took over a few days.

Initially, I experimented with diagrams, developing the ideas from the previous week. However, it seemed a bit boring for me, so I decided to brainstorm and develop some ideas.

Typography

The first was a typographic idea, using spiky letters to represent the image of a conker shell.

I also kept this idea as it looks like a star when the image is in black and white.

Point and colour

To further develop the idea, I also attempted a mapping using points and colours, referring to Yeohyun Ahn’s case study in Graphic Design: the New Basics.

Symbols

Finally, when I was looking for a way to express without using colours, the idea of Japanese weather symbols came to me from my own drawings.

So, based on the symbols like weather symbols, I made a mapping.

Feedback

Interestingly, the Japanese weather symbols caught the attention of the tutors and course mates. It was interesting that the symbols were familiar to me but seemed unique to them. Another piece of feedback that I thought would be helpful was that, as we were dealing with themes related to the sky, such as the constellation and weather symbols, I was asked if I could also relate the theme to the effects of climate change on the conker. Furthermore, the tutor suggested that the perspective of the sound of the conker falling could also be included, so I will not give up on that perspective and will continue to develop the idea.
